Miss New York was recently crowned Miss America 2013 in a glamours night of pageantry. Millions of viewers were tuned in as she graced the stage with her modern style and simplistic beauty. Aside from the commonly seen head full of long loose curls, many contestants, including the new Miss America 2013, opted to wear their hair pulled away from their face.
Wearing your hair pulled back and/or away from the face is always very simple and chic. Two styles worn by the contestants which displayed this simple elegance were 1) the oversized bun and 2) the pony tail.
The Oversized Bun
Typically the over sized bun is seen worn as a chignon for formal events. A chignon is hair gathered and rolled together at the back of the head or nape of the neck. During the Miss America pageant many of the contestants had their buns placed toward the top of their head. This placement created a more modern and flirty look. The best way to achieve the oversized bun is to gather the hair in a desired location on your head and secure with a hair tie. Wrap the loose ends of the hair around a base made of something such as weaving hair for stuffing. Secure the neatly rolled hair with hair pins and spray with holding spray.
The Pony Tail
The classic pony tail can be easily over looked when considering hair styles for a formal occasion. If done properly, as seen on the new Miss America 2013, the pony tail can be very chic. To achieve Miss Americas look you will want to start by gathering your hair into a mid pony tail at the back of your head near your occipital bone and secure with a hair tie. Smooth your edges down by emulsifying a light pomade in your hands and then applying to your edges or spraying your edges with a holding spray to get rid of any fly away hairs. Next, take a small section of hair from under the pony tail and wrap around the hair tie then secure with hair pins. Section out small portions of the hair in the pony tail and apply spiral curls with a marcel iron or curling wond (how tight or loose the curls are depends on preference). Once all the curls have cooled, lightly separate the curls for fullness.
Whether you choose the bun or the pony tail both styles are trendy and great for a formal occasion.
