Gabby Douglas - 2012 Olympics

A piece of African American history was created when Gabby Douglas was named first African American woman to win the 2012 Olympic Gymnastics Individual All-Around gold medal.  It was a pleasure to witness such a young woman grounded in faith and humbled in her success as she walked away from the 2012 Olympic games putting her mark in the history books.

During what should have been a time of celebration, like many others, I was disappointed to hear of the critiques regarding Gabby’s hair during her competition routines.  The level of intensity that goes into just one of Gabby’s performances far exceeds that of an average persons daily workout.  So if you don’t walk out of the gym looking just as polished as you did when you walked in, why should Gabby?

As an African American woman, I know too well that when you sweat from working out your hair will react!  We as a people must focus on what is important and lift one another up and not tear each other down.  Our hair is a part of our natural beauty and is a part of what makes us unique.  How you style your hair is a form of your own self expression.

It is understood that regardless of what anyone accomplishes, people are always going to have an opinion.  If you have an opinion make it worth the time to listen to.
